Resumes are Bullshit

You’ve all done it.

Nobody likes it.

It’s time consuming and feels pretty pointless before you sit down and do it.

No, I am not talking about doing your taxes (relevant)… we are talking resumes, people!

Whether you are looking for your first job or transitioning into a new career, it all starts with your resume.

People say this document can make or break your chances of getting an interview which is exactly why you need to fill it with absolute bullshit.

If you are recent college graduate much like myself, did your internships or job experience in college really give you pivotal responsibilities?

I mean, really?

Did your internship at Boeing allow you to have a hands-on experience of building an aircraft? Or did you just watch and write on your resume that you did?

Or how about that job had in college? Did you actually engage with administration on a weekly basis or did you only show up when necessary and complained the whole time you were there?

I bet you didn’t write any of that on your resume.

In general, the major content sections for a resume is your contact information, education, work experience and applicable skills.

While the first two you can’t really change, it is beyond easy to fabricate your work experience and skills.

It’s not like the reader of your resume actually knows you as a person.

Sure, they can reach out to your references for more information but do companies always contact your references?

If your reference likes you, they are obviously going to campaign for your hire….  and if they don’t, you probably aren’t going to get that job and are dumb for not picking someone else.

(Side note: How reliable are these references? I know plenty of people who use their parents or significant other to pretend to be their employer)

Of course I think it’s important for the employer to know about your professional history to discover if you are qualified for the position.

But that doesn’t mean that what you are really doing is making it sound a lot better than it actually was.

Or maybe that’s just me.

While each of my work experiences have been valuable to my professional and personal growth, if an employer were to ask me to provide a brief and honest portrayal of my resume without judgment, this is probably what it would look like:

X

Have you ever thought about the truth behind your resume?

What would it look like?

Intriguing, I know.

Happy job hunting folks!

Cheers,

Erin

P.S. If you are my future employer, I really hope you have a good sense of humor.
